4/18　The Band のドラマーだったLevon Helm の公式サイトに家族からのメッセージが掲載された。

 

Dear friends,

Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer.

Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey.

Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration... he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance!

He did it every time he took the stage... We appreciate all the love and support and concern.

彼は1996年に喉頭がんを発症し歌うことができなくなってしまったが、それでも音楽活動を継続、その後奇跡的に回復し、最近は良質なアルバムを発表し続けていた。彼の作品は、グラミー賞において2008年"Best traditional Folk Album"、2009年・2011年の"Best Americana Album"を受賞し、高い評価を得ていた。

そんな矢先の悲しすぎるメッセージだった。もはや安らかな旅立ちを祈る状況だったのだろうが、今回も奇跡がおきることを願っていた。

 

そして4/19に再び家族から・・・

 

Levon Helm passed peacefully this afternoon.

He was surrounded by family,friends and band mates

and will be remembered by all he touched as a brilliant musician and a beautiful soul.

 

 

一番 "The Band"らしい歌声は、Levon Helmがメインで歌い、Rick Dankoが高音をかぶせる響きだったかもしれない。そして、とうとう"The Band"の3人の歌声が全て失われてしまった。

最近の彼の作品は本当に素晴らしかった。2009年のアルバム "Electric Dirt"を聞きなおして、本当にそう思う。

彼の生涯には、我々ファンには分からない壮絶な闘いがあったのかもしれない。それでも最後まで多くの友人に愛され、最愛の家族が見守る中で、穏やかに天国に旅立っていったのだろう。
